In more recent history, Lowell has become home to the second largest Cambodian community in the United States. Beginning in the early 1980’s, thousands of Cambodians, from largely agrarian backgrounds, fled a communist regime and auto-genocide in their homeland and resettled in the post-industrial city of Lowell.

The 2010 Census puts the Cambodian population in Lowell at about 13,000 which was about 12.5% of Lowell’s total population. However, Cambodian community leaders there give a higher estimate of the total Cambodian population at between 25,000 and 35,000.
